Chapter Nineteen
Breakfast was brought out shortly after Adhar forced us to break it up. Nakul didnât stay with his brother and nephew, following me and Raphael to our own place in the courtyard, far away from Aamir, who had gone back to Pavan. Dalar finally came out, looking around fearfully. He would have heard everything. He left the twin heâd had in their suite and quickly took the other there. Aamir refused to put Roshni down or give her to anyone else, keeping her to his chest possessively. Pavan hovered, sending a glare at me before turning his back. I didnât get any food yet, letting them get theirs, so there were no unnecessary comments. I didnât want to stress Adhar out too much.
âWell, that could have gone much better,â Nakul said, giving me a sympathetic look. âFew people know myâ¦history,â he admitted softly. âAdhar, my brother, and his family. Vikrant, but not his mate. No one else. If they did, they might not jump on you so quickly. My apologies.â
âWhy donât they know?â I asked, keeping my voice low like his. We were far enough away from the rest to worry about anyone overhearing us, but heâd jumped into a sensitive topic that had to be handled with care. Care I was inclined not to give because it pissed me off it was kept a secret.
The delicate line of protecting my peopleâs future and working with the Tribunal. Some of these fools will never understand the balance or what it costs me.
âWould you believe me if I said I am ashamed?â He looked around the room. âFor years, I was an honored warrior, but I tarnished that in a period of insanity and darkness. I ruined myself and will spend my life trying to make up for something that I canât. Adhar has been a great help, telling me to focus on the good things I can do now. I can never tell my victims Iâm sorry, but he believes I can save others one day. He has so much hope for me, but I have been scared to share my shame.â
âIâve never properly asked what you were thinking those years, and I donât want toâ¦What you did was terrible, whether or not you were in your right mind.â I said nothing else. Humans had similar things happen in their world. Sometimes, people lost their minds, and they hurt peopleâ¦killed people. Sometimes, they could be helped, sometimes they couldnât, but in every case, what they did is unforgivable, and Nakulâs crimes were immense.
âThe only way to move past it is to admit your shame,â Raphael said, leaning against a pillar. âFace it head-on and fight to right the wrongs youâve committed.â
âI canât bring people back to life,â Nakul said, shaking his head.
âAn honorable man would admit he took those lives,â Raphael said, his expression dark. âAnd face the consequences for the rest of his life, in every situation heâs met with. Since honor means so much to you nagas.â Raphael wasnât holding back.
